The organisers are constantly looking to improve the race experience for participants and spectators alike. In 2024, expect enhanced race logistics, improved aid stations, and better trail markings to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all runners. The UTMB Group has also strengthened its commitment to clean trail running, and or 2024 have introduced 1. Systematic and random testing by an independent organization: we’ll be partnering with the International Testing Agency an independent international non-profit foundation that specializes in the fight against doping in sport. 2. New Anti-Doping Rules, aligning with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards for transparency and fairness: utmb.world/Anti-doping. 3. Educational Programs: Offering free webinars to 1,400 elite athletes and their managers, helping them understand anti-doping rules and practices.

Sustainability Initiatives

UTMB has always been committed to preserving the natural beauty of the Mont Blanc region. In 2024, expect to see increased efforts towards sustainability. This includes measures to reduce waste, promote recycling, and minimise the environmental impact of the event. Participants are encouraged to use reusable cups and bottles, and there will be initiatives to protect the local environment.

Increased Accessibility

To make the event more inclusive, there will be efforts to improve accessibility for both participants and spectators. This includes better transportation options to and from Chamonix, more viewing points along the course, and enhanced facilities for people with disabilities.

Technological Innovations

Technology continues to play a crucial role in enhancing the UTMB experience. In 2024, expect advancements in live tracking, allowing supporters to follow their favourite runners in real-time. The official UTMB app will offer more features, including interactive maps, live updates, and personalised race information.

Preparing for UTMB 2024

Whether you're planning to participate or simply follow the event, preparation is key. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

For Participants
  1. Training: UTMB races are among the most challenging in the world. Training should start well in advance and include a mix of long-distance runs, hill training, and strength workouts. Familiarise yourself with the course profiles and simulate race conditions as much as possible.

  2. Gear: The right gear can make a huge difference. Invest in high-quality trail running shoes, moisture-wicking clothing, and a comfortable hydration pack. Essential items include a headlamp, trekking poles, and weather-appropriate gear. Popular brands among UTMB runners include Salomon, Hoka One One, and Patagonia.

  3. Nutrition: Develop a nutrition strategy that works for you. During the race, you'll need a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to keep your energy levels up. Practice eating on the run during your training sessions to find out what your stomach can handle.

  4. Acclimatisation: If possible, arrive in Chamonix a few days early to acclimatise to the altitude. This can help reduce the risk of altitude sickness and improve your performance on race day.

  5. Mental Preparation: The mental aspect of ultra-running is just as important as the physical. Prepare yourself for the highs and lows of the race, and develop strategies to stay motivated when the going gets tough.

For Spectators
  1. Accommodation: Book your accommodation well in advance. Chamonix gets very busy during UTMB week, and hotels fill up quickly. Consider staying in nearby towns if you can't find a place in Chamonix itself.

  2. Viewing Spots: Plan where you want to watch the race. There are many excellent viewing points along the course, including key aid stations and mountain passes. Some popular spots include Les Houches, Courmayeur, and Champex-Lac.

  3. Support: If you're supporting a runner, make sure you understand their race plan and know where you'll meet them. Offer words of encouragement, provide necessary supplies, and be ready to help with any unexpected issues.

  4. Engagement: Join in the festivities! Chamonix offers a range of activities during UTMB week, from film screenings and athlete talks to gear expos and local markets. Engage with the trail running community and soak up the atmosphere.

UTMB 2024 promises to be an extraordinary event, offering a unique blend of adventure, challenge, and community spirit. Whether you're participating, supporting a runner, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, there's something for everyone. Prepare well, soak in the stunning scenery, and make the most of this incredible experience in the heart of the French Alps.

Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to be part of the world’s leading trail running event!
